What is a 180mm PP Chemical Drum Brush?
A 180mm PP Chemical Drum Brush is a hand-guided cleaning tool built specifically for open-top chemical drums, totes, and large process vessels. It uses a round, 180mm-diameter brush head made entirely of polypropylene — including the bristles and the molded base — mounted on a long threaded handle.
In use, the operator lowers the head into the drum and scrubs the interior with push, pull, and rotating strokes. The round profile matches the drum curvature, so the bristle tips stay in contact across the sidewall, bottom corner, and chime ring. The bristles flex enough to follow the surface but hold their shape in wet chemical environments.
The brush is meant for regular residue removal: product film, rinse residue, powders, light scale, biofilm, and loose particles. It is not an abrasive tool for baked-on deposits, polymerized material, or heavy rust — those conditions call for wire or abrasive brushes. Polypropylene also has a practical service limit around 90°C (194°F) continuous, and it is not recommended for strong oxidizing acids or aggressive aromatic solvents.

Where does this brush work best?

How do I choose the right one?
Start with the opening and drum diameter
The 180mm head requires an access opening of at least 200mm to enter without forcing. For 55-gallon open-top drums, that works. If you are cleaning through a bung hole (2-inch or 3/4-inch opening), this brush is too large — choose a bung-hole brush or smaller-diameter drum brush for that access. Also verify the head diameter relative to drum ID: it should contact the sidewall without flexing the outer bristles flat. For drums significantly wider than 600mm ID, a larger head diameter may clean faster.
Match bristle stiffness to the residue
Standard PP bristles are medium-stiff and work well for films, powders, and soft residues. If the residue is thin and the surface is coated or sensitive, a softer PP trim or finer filament diameter reduces contact pressure. For heavy sludge or sticky residues, a stiffer trim or larger filament diameter increases scraping action. If the residue is hardened, polymerized, or mineralized, PP will not remove it — move to a stainless steel or abrasive drum brush.
Check chemical and temperature exposure
PP handles dilute acids, alkalis, detergents, and many solvents, but it softens above ~90°C and can be attacked by strong oxidizing acids, certain aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated solvents. Verify the cleaning chemicals and wash temperatures in your process. For high-temperature washdown or aggressive solvent cleaning, discuss PVDF or stainless options with us.
Confirm handle length and operator position
The standard 700mm handle plus 350mm head keeps the operator’s hands above the drum rim while reaching the bottom of a standard 55-gallon drum. For taller tanks or sumps, request a longer handle. For ergonomic work with two hands, we can supply a T-handle or loop grip. The threaded connection lets you keep spare heads on hand and change them between product lines.
Use the right brush for the right vessel
Use this brush for open-top drums and vessels where manual scrubbing is the cleaning method. It is not designed for power rotation, very narrow openings, or abrasive blast cleaning. For automated drum-washing systems, ask about rotary drum brush configurations.
Can I customize this brush?
Yes. This drum brush is built around your drum dimensions, residue, and chemical exposure. Send us the drum ID, internal depth, access opening size, chemical list, wash temperature, and the residue you need to remove. A photo or drawing of the drum and the soiled area helps us confirm fit.

Which filament survives the cleaning chemicals a 180mm PP chemical drum brush meets?
What drum sizes does the 180mm head actually fit?
Standard 55-gallon drums have an internal diameter around 570–600mm. The 180mm head leaves plenty of clearance, and the bristles reach the sidewall when you angle the handle. For drums wider than 700mm ID, consider a larger head for faster coverage. The opening must be at least 200mm for the head and handle to pass.
Can I use this brush with a power drill or rotary shaft?
This brush is designed for manual scrubbing. The PP head and threaded connection are not rated for the torque and speed of a drill; high-speed rotation can damage the threads or throw bristles. If you need powered drum cleaning, ask us about rotary drum brushes with reinforced cores.
How do I rinse and store the brush between uses?
Rinse with a compatible solvent or water until the bristles run clean, then hang the brush by the handle to drain. Store it out of direct sunlight because UV exposure makes PP brittle over time. Keep it away from heat sources above 90°C and from strong oxidizing chemicals.
How can I tell when the brush head is worn or chemically damaged?
Check for splayed or permanently bent bristles, bristles that no longer spring back when pushed, cracks at the base, thread wear, or a brittle feel. Discoloration alone may be cosmetic, but cracking or softening means chemical attack. Replace the head if the bristle tips no longer contact the drum wall with light pressure.
Will the PP bristles scratch stainless steel or lined drums?
Polypropylene is softer than metal and generally will not scratch stainless steel or HDPE drum walls. However, abrasive particles caught in the bristles can scratch the surface. Rinse the brush between drums and inspect the bristles for embedded grit before using it on a new surface.
Is this brush suitable for food-contact drum cleaning?
PP is widely used in food-processing equipment, but food-contact suitability depends on the specific grade, colorants, and your process requirements. If your drums hold food or beverage products and require food-contact compliance, specify this during the RFQ so we can supply the correct material grade and documentation support.
