Application

Hose Cleaning

For Hose Cleaning, the brush must reach the working area, disturb or collect oil / sludge / food residue / mineral scale / biofilm, and release it without creating unacceptable surface damage or process interference. The available access and required motion should be reviewed together with the cleaning method.

Hose is flexible, usually curved, and normally longer than any rigid brush can reach, so the tool has to be pulled or driven through it rather than pushed into it.

What makes Hose Cleaning different from other industrial and manufacturing cleaning?

The main difficulty is removing oil, carbon, scale, biofilm, process residue, and particles from bores, channels, tubes, hoses, ports, and internal passages without damaging the surface, loading the brush, or carrying contamination back into the process.

The work happens in indoor wet area and industrial process area against oil, sludge, food residue, mineral scale and biofilm.

The part people get wrong: the surface, the residue and the access opening decide the brush together. Fix on any one of them alone and the geometry comes out wrong.

What are the most common cleaning targets in Hose Cleaning?

The work breaks into 5 targets. They look similar from outside the machine and behave nothing alike at the brush.

Part or area Residue type Cleaning requirement
Food and Beverage Hose Oil, sludge, food residue, mineral scale, biofilm The brush must pass the full length of the passage and hold contact with the wall without folding over at the far end.
Hydraulic Hose Hydraulic oil, varnish, metal particles, seal and hose debris
Vacuum and Dust-Extraction Hose Dust, powder and compacted fines
Medical and Respiratory Hose Condensate, mucus and protein film, biofilm, disinfectant residue
Pool and Water Hose Biofilm, algae, mineral scale, silt

What the equipment leaves you to work inside:

Parameter Typical range
Internal diameter 1–300 mm
Passage length 20–10,000 mm

Which brush types work for each cleaning target?

Flexible cable or twisted-wire tube brush with rounded end, pull-through brush or pig-style brush for larger hose.

Cleaning target Recommended brush type Why it fits
Food and Beverage Hose Tube & Pipe Bore Brushes A product hose holds a film on a bore nobody can see, so a brush drawn through it is what proves the wall is clean rather than merely rinsed.
Hydraulic Hose A hydraulic hose has to be free of the debris that would score a valve, so a close-fitting bore brush is pulled through before the assembly is capped.
Vacuum and Dust-Extraction Hose An extraction hose is corrugated inside, so the brush has to reach into each corrugation where airflow alone never lifts the packed dust.
Medical and Respiratory Hose A respiratory hose is thin-walled and must not be damaged, so a soft-filament bore brush holds contact along the run without abrading the bore.
Pool and Water Hose A pool hose stays wet and grows biofilm over the whole wall, so a bore brush is what lifts it instead of just pushing water through it.

How the brush is usually carried on the machine:

  • Driven brush — use when oil, carbon, scale, biofilm, process residue, and particles needs repeatable scrubbing or controlled relative movement
  • Passive or free-running brush — use for loose contamination and lower process complexity on bores, channels, tubes, hoses, ports, and internal passages
  • Localized hand, strip, or tube brush — use where only an edge, gap, port, or maintenance point needs contact

In practical brush terms: match the construction to the access before anything else. A geometry that cannot reach the target will not be rescued by a better filament.

What filament materials work best for Hose Cleaning?

Soft nylon, PBT or polypropylene; chemical-resistant grades chosen based on conveyed fluid and cleaning solution.

If the condition is… Filament to start with Why
Soft-wall or lined hose Nylon PA, soft grade lifts sludge without cutting the liner
Cleaner swinging from pH 2 to pH 13 Polypropylene PP resists both ends of the range without softening
Mineral scale bonded to the bore Stainless Steel 316 Wire cuts scale and resists the acid used to loosen it

What the duty rules out before you start comparing grades:

Constraint Value for this application
Filament hardness Medium
Maximum service temperature 120°C
Chemical exposure Neutral, acidic or alkaline cleaner, typically pH 2–13; solvent exposure by hose service
Cleaning method Wet Brushing, Soaking, Steam Cleaning

How do I choose the right brush for my hose equipment?

Since a stiff stem will not go round a bend, start from the drive — pull-through or flexible cable — and only then match diameter to hose ID.

The sequence that gets a usable sample first time:

  1. Identify the target part and measure the access opening or clearance
  2. Describe the residue: what it is, how thick it sits, and how strongly it holds
  3. Choose the construction that can physically reach that target
  4. Set the filament from surface risk, working temperature and cleaning chemistry
  5. Fix filament diameter, free trim length and density for the contact pressure you need
  6. Run one cycle and check the result before committing to a production quantity

Before you commit to a quantity, send the hose ID, the run length, the tightest bend radius, and whether both ends are accessible.

When is a hose brush the wrong tool?

A recirculating CIP loop cleans a food or dairy hose better than pulling a brush through it, and a hydraulic hose contaminated internally is normally replaced rather than cleaned. Brushing is for hose you can reach from both ends and intend to keep in service.

What common mistakes should I avoid in Hose Cleaning?

  • Quoting hose OD instead of ID, and leaving out the bend radius the brush has to pass through
  • Changing brush material while leaving excessive engagement, poor alignment, or no discharge path unchanged
  • Copying a worn brush without recording motion, direction, mounting, and the original working diameter

If the brush is already in service and the result is wrong, work from the symptom:

Symptom What to change
Residue remains Increase relative motion or discharge, then change filament diameter or density; do not add pressure before checking loading by oil, carbon, scale, biofilm, process residue, and particles.
Surface marks or scratches Reduce engagement, use finer or softer fill, and remove trapped abrasive particles from contact with bores, channels, tubes, hoses, ports, and internal passages.
Rapid wear or uneven cleaning Check alignment, runout, support, motion, temperature, chemical attack, and whether the brush covers the complete working path.
Brush loads or redeposits residue Open the fill pattern or add wash, vacuum, air, scraping, or a collection path so removed oil, carbon, scale, biofilm, process residue, and particles leaves the contact zone.

Questions this page is asked

How should a cleaning brush be qualified for a hose with several bends and couplings?

Measure the smallest bore, coupling restriction, total length and tightest bend in the installed or representative hose, then trial the wetted brush and its full core or pulling cable through that path. Reject a setup that kinks the hose, jams at a fitting, leaves an uncontacted outer bend or requires uncontrolled pushing force.

What must a chemical-compatibility trial include for hose brushing?

Test the actual hose liner, fittings, seals, brush fill, core and joints with the named cleaner or solvent at its real concentration, temperature, contact time, flexing and rinse cycle. Inspect swelling, softening, cracking, color transfer, loss of brush recovery and joint corrosion after repeated cycles rather than relying on a table for only one material.

Which checks should close a hose-cleaning cycle?

Verify the defined rinse endpoint at the outlet, inspect accessible ends and couplings for loosened soil or filament fragments, and confirm that the hose drains in its service orientation. Where cleanliness is critical, use the site's validated residue or microbiological method and document the pass limit before returning the hose to service.
